The title 'Spiritual Teacher' implies that life is all sewn up and sorted, that they always feel happy, going with the flow and trusting the universe. To some people, it sounds like a superior status as if the world doesn't taint them or they are above everyone. To others it sounds ungrounded, as if reality doesn't touch them and their words are castles in the air, not relevant to normal life. The word 'Spiritual' even has this kind of aloft, aloof ring to it.
But, the truth is.... Being human doesn't make special allowances for anyone. Allowing it makes a master of everyone. If you try to live above humanity, be better than it and not get involved, life will throw you face down in it. If you try to hide, avoiding being the human who you are, you'll be forced out of hiding and exposed. Like the children's story "We're going on a bear hunt" sagely states, "We can't go over it, we can't go under it... Oh NO! We've got to go through it!" There's no way out of life and being human, but through. In life, there is always a cutting edge, a sharp learning curve, a new layer of consciousness starkly revealed. There's always winter following summer, where inner weather strips bare, blows down, tears up and rots what was recently fun and fruitful. There's always destruction before development, fear-inducing rites of passage before entering new paradigms, and sacrifices to be made of righteous belief systems and spiritual egos if the heart is to reign, for EVERYONE. The Secret Sauce to Being Human... In all our years, cycles and soul seasons in this human form, one thing remains true, no matter what happens or what you do. One thing is your saviour, your lifeline, your beloved, your friend, your true Guru. Is it okay with you if I share? Love. Love never abandoned you, never left your side, never left you when my lover did. Love never judged you when you were in fear, never scolded you when you were wrong, or shamed you when you were weak. Love ceaselessly caresses you from within, and holds you close even when you don't let it in. Love is what we fight with all of the time, terrified as we are of it's exposing light, but it's what we most seek, most need, and all that we really want. Love is the fire that burns at our core, it's the light that illuminates the stars, it's the 'self' we search for, it's the god we pray for. Love is the creation itself, the be all and end all. Without it we are nothing. With it we are kings and queens, emperors and empresses. It's the secret sauce to everything. In love, paupers prosper and beggars are reborn. In love, we return to the child we once were. In love, innocence is rekindled, genius is re-ignited, creation has passion to it, play has purpose to it, relationships have meaning, and labour becomes service. The age-old question still begs - "But HOW?" Practically, in every day reality...How can you get this luminous but illustrious thing that seems to disappear in the night? That when you grab for it, it slips through your fingers? How can you keep love and remember it, and have it save your life like it has mine, over and over, time and time again? I've been bullied and abused, I've been raped and used, I've been beaten and bruised, I've been burned and confused. I've been lost in illusion, caught by false promises and drowned in delusion. I've been alone and abandoned, I've been helpless and stranded. I've been the victim and the aggressor, been eye to eye with madness and head to head with depression. I've been penniless and homeless, I've been brought to my knees and I've been thoughtless, and through it all there was a presence, a blessing, a gift. Love taught me to love ALL of myself. I became a teacher of what I most needed to learn, and continue to. It's humbling. When I had nothing, I realised I had everything. When I thought I was nothing, love showed me who I really am. It was always inside me, and so I used it; like a tool to mend, like a cloth to clean, like a friend to lean on and like an angel to heal me. I let Love love me, and I followed suit. I learned from it's ways and I tracked it's routes. Love showed me the impossible was always right there. Love showed me truth in the darkness, and guided me there. Loving ourselves is perhaps the greatest challenge on earth because it goes against our survival instinct to avoid what we don't understand and run from what we most fear: Ourselves. We are our own greatest enemy, and our own shadow haunts our soul eternally, until one day we discover that there's nowhere left to go, but IN. So, next time life has you in a tail-spin again and you're taking the thousandth nose dive, perhaps it's time to make a life changing, destiny altering, world transforming decision? Turn and face your inner demons and love them into wholeness instead. Come home to you. You are worth loving, unconditionally. I hope this helps.
